Grade 5 UPDATE

Important dates coming up!

June 23 Grade 5's Swimming in afternoon.
June 24 Grade 5 Theme 5 (Human Sexuality) videos being shown.
June 25th last day of regular classes.
June 28th Pancake Breakfast
June 28th Grade 5/6 Track and Field Day
June 29th Last day of school - early dismissal 1:30 p.m

I would like all the grade 5 classes to be prepared to go outside and explore our school habitat area. This means they should bring their rubber boots and bug spray everyday this week!

Grade 5 NEWS/UPDATES

Band concert tonight June 9th....your child is expected to be at the school by about 6:30 p.m. After they do their performance they will be coming to Mr. Bohnet's classroom to watch a movie and if you want take them home early, you just need to come and knock on Mr. Bohnet's classroom door to pick your child up.

GRADE 5 CAMP

June 17th is arriving quickly! Just a reminder to parents who are volunteering, if you have not sent in your criminal record check yet, could you please do so immediately. Also, if your child will be taking any kind of medication while out at camp, you need to come into the school and sign a medication request form. Please try and not leave this until the day of camp as it is a pretty busy morning. Your child should have brought home all of the information by now explaining the materials they should/can bring out to grade 5 camp. The buses are picking us up at 5:00 p.m on friday June 18th, so we should be back to the school by around 5:30 p.m. On the thursday when we leave for camp your child needs to bring a bag lunch that is completely disposable and nut free.
If you have any further questions about camp, please talk to your child's teacher.

Maturation Videos - June 24th
Your child should have brought home a letter explaining that on June 24th we will be giving the students a presentation on maturation. They will be watching 2 videos and if you want to preview them before, you must talk to your child's teacher. If you wish to not have your child participate in this presentation, then you also need to either phone your child's teacher or send them a note explaining your request.

MATH 5A and 5C

Finished their measurement unit and will be writing their tests tomorrow. 5B will finish their unit tomorrow and write their test on friday.
Next unit is on 2D shapes.

SCIENCE 5A, 5B and 5C
All classes are finishing up their chemistry units and will be reviewing over the next couple of days and hopefully write their test by next wednesday. Look for them to bring home some review sheets that they should be using to study from.

Social Studies
Complete Family Heritage Worksheet - Students will be asking their family about their heritage in order to enhance our Social Studies unit "Canadian Immigration".

FYI
In Math, we are beginning our review of our Measurement Unit in preparation for our unit test next week. Also, we will be finishing our Chemistry Unit next week. Our next unit is "Wetlands".

Language Arts - Students have completed chapter 10 reading and worksheets of "Underground to Canada"



FOR 5A STUDENTS ONLY
During Advisory Class,we are completing and discussing different activities in their "Friends for Life" workbook. This is a Life Skills Program and we encourage your son/daughter to discuss these assignments with you.

SWIMMING MONDAY - MAY 31st! - ALL GRADE 5's

Please bring your swim gear. Grade 5 students will be going swimming on Monday, May 31 at 1:00p.m.

Westglen's Spring Band Concert is Wednesday, June 9. Students are expected to be at school by 6:30 that evening. We will be having full band rehearsals over the next days that will cause some disruption to regularly scheduled classes. Friday May 28th is the first rehearsal for the grade 5 students in periods 6 and 7!

Reminder Grade 5 CAMP - Pioneer Ranch - June 17th and 18th - return home to school around 5:30 p.m.... more information will be sent home with students soon regarding what they need to bring to camp!

There are still a number of students that haven't returned the required documentation for Grade 5 Camp. Parents: Please return Grade 5 Camp Forms now. If you are not sure what camp forms you should have returned yet, then have your child ask their homeroom teacher or give them a call.

MATH
Students are working on the unit "Measurement".
Homework due for Thursday - 5A - Math booklet up to and including page 15
5C - Math booklet up to and including pg 16
5B - Any 9 pages need to be done for Thursday May 27th!
SCIENCE
We are working on the unit "Chemistry" - many hands on fun experiments!!!

LANGUAGE ARTS (5A, 5B)
- Reading "Underground to Canada"
- Short story writing

SOCIAL STUDIES (5A, 5B)
Canadian History - Just finishing our unit on Chinese Immigrants and the building of the railway and will continue our study of the Underground Railway. After that we will be studying European Immigrants.

Science - students are completing their Electricity/Magnetism Unit. We will be moving onto "Classroom Chemisty".

Social Studies - We are continuing our study of Canadian History and are presently working on Recruitment Posters for the Northwest Mounted Police.

Language Arts - 5a and 5b - We are just beginning a novel study of "Underground to Canada". Please discuss this theme with your son/daughter.

Band - Please send back the form confirming that your son/daughter will/won't be continuing with the band program in September. This form is required for next terms' planning and to date, several students have not returned them. They were due Thursday, May 6.

The spring band concert is Wednesday, June 9 and students are required to be at the school for 6:30. The concert begins at 7:00.


Grade 5 Camp

Camp Information (medical, diet) and Field Trip Form and all money is due by MAY 14, 2010.


Notices were sent home with your son/daughter last Friday, April 30. If you need to make financial arrangements, please contact Mr. Bohnet by MAY 14. Please note that there were several students that sold enough chocolates to cover their camp costs. These students received notices of zero balance as well.
